2D DRAFTING IN AUTOCAD COURSE

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is conducted within a theatre context, with content tailored to provide adequate foundation knowledge in 2D drafting for fellow theatre practitioners’ practical usage. The objective is to equip participants with sufficient understanding and skills to access the software with reasonable confidence and to continue exploring it on their own.

Please note that this is not an authorised AutoCAD training programme.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

Woan Wen received the inaugural National Arts Council Arts Professional Scholarship in 2001 to train at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in stage lighting design. She was formally introduced to AutoCAD then, and has since been using the software to draft more than 200 lighting plans as well as set floor plans. She currently uses the 2022 version for Mac.

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR

The course is suitable for all theatre practitioners who are interested to acquire fundamental knowledge of the software. It is equally useful for those who are seeking to pick up 2D drafting skills (e.g. technical staff, designers, etc.) as well as those who mostly require to read and modify existing plans (e.g. production managers, stage managers, production coordinators, etc.).

It can also be taken as a refresher for those who wish to brush up on forgotten skills, or those who were self-taught and would appreciate re-establishing a wholistic overview of the software, while picking up a new shortcut or two.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Upon completing the workshop, you should be able to create a 2D floor plan from scratch with the drafting software, on top of navigating, organising, modifying and exporting existing DWG files. There will be mini exercises and assignments for you to practice these skills in the workshop. Please note that depending on individual progress, you may need to complete some of these at your own time outside of the workshop.

While we will touch on the different routes that can be used to execute commands, this workshop will focus on the most efficient method: combining keyboard shortcuts with the use of a mouse. Demonstrations will be presented on AutoCAD for Mac, and participants using Windows will be guided through the differences.
