Bubble Up, Bubba!

Suitable for young people aged 10 to 18 years old with intellectual disabilities and sensory sensitivities

Presented by The Finger Players
Supported by Qualcomm Foundation, with the help of Tote Board Arts Fund

Synopsis

Bubble Up, Bubba! is an accessible, intimate, and interactive puppetry-based performance experience for young people with intellectual disabilities and sensory sensitivities. With a gentle pace, close-up sensory moments, and playful singing and dancing, this performance experience invites audiences to engage at their own comfort level.

Bubba is visiting the pool for the first time on their own. The water is deep, their heart is racing, and suddenly, panic sets in. Just when it feels like too much, a friendly Bubble appears! Bubble encourages Bubba to trust the water and find their courage from within. Together, they discover the joy of rising above fear, reminding us that even when we feel out of our depth, we can always “bubble up!”

Generally, this programme is most suitable for young people aged 10 to 18 years old with intellectual disabilities and sensory sensitivities. However, individuals who are outside this age range are also welcome. Parental supervision is strongly advised for children under 6 years old. We seek the understanding of the parents/guardians that the performance experience will differ for different ages. It is in The Finger Players’ best interest to create community programmes which are relevant, conducive, and engaging for our audiences.

If I am not diagnosed with intellectual disability and/or sensory sensitivities, may I watch the performance?

Yes. The public performances are open to individuals with an intellectual disability and/or sensory sensitivities; parents/guardians of individuals with an intellectual disability and/or sensory sensitivities; as well as individuals with no diagnosed intellectual disability and/or sensory sensitivities who are keen to watch the show.

Are there prerequisite skills that the audience needs to have for the show? E.g. Being able to stay seated for 15 minutes, participate verbally and/or react to call and response.

There is no pre-requisite. The show encourages everyone to engage at their own comfort level.

As a caregiver, do I sit next to my child/ward during the entire performance?

Yes, we highly recommend the caregivers to accompany their child/ward at all times to ensure safety.

In the event of an escalation or meltdown, will there be a safety response plan?

There will be a quiet corner set up where audience members can retreat to decompress whenever needed. A few personnels will also be present to provide support for the caregivers.

Who is facilitating the performance / post-show engagement?

This performance will be directed and facilitated by Myra Loke. Myra is a theatre director, puppeteer / performer, designer, maker, and educator. Her artistic journey in Singapore’s theatre started 19 years ago. Now, Myra is part of the core team of The Finger Players. She led the company as Co-Artistic Director from 2020 – 2023, and currently serves as the General Manager of the Company. Working with organisations such as Grace Orchard School, Thye Hua Kwan, MINDS, SPD, and Rainbow Centre, Myra has had many experiences conducting workshops with beneficiaries of different disabilities, such as Autism and Down Syndrome; as well as of different ages from 10 to 30 years old.

Has the team conducted any research regarding accessibility in arts?

In preparation for Bubble Up, Bubba!, The Finger Players has conducted a few observation workshops with relevant beneficiaries, courtesy of MINDS and SPD. These experiences have helped to shape the performance experience and guide the team in building a show that is suitable for young people aged 10 to 18 years old with intellectual disabilities and sensory sensitivities.
