Introduction to Puppetry (Workshop)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

In this two-hour interactive lecture workshop, the puppeteer-facilitator will take the participants through a short introduction of puppetry, giving participants an insight to the types of puppets used around the world, and their respective histories.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE

(1) Introduction to Puppets (30 Minutes)

Traditional Puppets – Chinese Hand Puppets, Indonesian Wayang Kulit and French Marionette

Contemporary Puppets – Object Puppets, Rod Puppets, Shadow Puppets, Fusion Puppet and Mask Puppet

(2) Interaction with Puppets (30 Minutes)

The participants will be split into groups, with each group being led by a puppeteer. This interaction segment would allow them to deepen their understanding of the puppets that were previously introduced.

(3) Creating with Puppets (30 minutes)

Participants would work within their groups to create a short performance with their puppet of choice.

(4) Showcase (30 minutes)

Participants will watch the performance created by their peers, with the puppets they’ve learned from the puppeteers at The Finger Players.

LOGISTIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Classroom with chairs and tables that can be flushed to the sides
  • White background (Wall/Whiteboard)
  • Powerpoint Access
  • Soundproof preferable but not necessary
